The Benefits of Soy Wax vs Paraffin Candles

The Benefits of Soy Wax vs Paraffin Candles

Why the Type of Wax Actually Matters

We get it... a candle's a candle, right? Not quite. The wax makes a bigger difference than you'd think, especially when it comes to what you're breathing in and how long your candle lasts. That's why we only use soy wax here at Highland Home Aromas.

So What's Soy Wax?

It's made from soybeans. Yep, the same ones you'd find in your local farm. It's natural, renewable, and doesn't contain any nasty chemicals. Just clean, plant-based wax.

And Paraffin?

Paraffin comes from petroleum - basically a leftover from oil refining. It's cheap, which is why it's been used in candles for years. But cheap doesn't always mean better.

The Honest Truth About Paraffin

Look, paraffin does have some advantages. It's affordable, which makes candles accessible to more people. It also holds colour really well and can produce a strong scent throw. Plus, it's been around forever, so candle makers know exactly how to work with it. If budget is your main concern, paraffin candles will do the job.

But here's the thing - there are some trade-offs worth knowing about.

Why Soy Wax is Worth It

Burns Cleaner

Soy wax doesn't produce much soot, so you won't get that black stuff on your walls or ceiling. Paraffin? It can release chemicals like toluene and benzene when it burns. Not ideal when you're trying to relax.

Lasts Way Longer

Soy burns slower, giving you around 30–50% more burn time. More value, plain and simple. Paraffin might be cheaper upfront, but soy often works out better in the long run especially when you just want to light a wee candle and put your feet up.

Smells Better (and More Natural)

Soy releases fragrance slowly and evenly. You get a lovely, consistent scent without it smacking you in the face the second you walk in the room.

Better for the Planet

Soybeans are renewable. Petroleum isn't. Simple as that. Plus soy wax is biodegradable, so it's kinder to the environment all round.

Easy to Clean Up

Spilled a bit of wax? Nae bother. Soy wax cleans up easily with warm, soapy water. Paraffin… not so forgiving.

Vegan and Cruelty-Free

If that matters to you (and it does to us), soy ticks all the boxes.

Why We Use Soy

Every candle and melt we make here in the Highlands - right up in Caithness - is poured using 100% soy wax. No paraffin, no palm wax, no blends. Just pure, natural soy.

We're not saying paraffin candles are terrible — they've got their place. But if you care about what you're breathing in, how long your candle lasts, and the impact on the environment, soy is the way to go.

Ready to Make the Switch?

If you've been burning paraffin candles, give soy a try. You'll notice the difference - cleaner air, longer burn time, and a scent that just feels more natural. Browse our collection and see what all the fuss is about.
